Post-treatment care: what to do after microneedling

Reviewed by Cassidy, aesthetic therapist · Updated · 3 min read

Microneedling Treatment

The short answer

For 24 hours after microneedling, skip makeup, heat and hard exercise, and keep your hands off your face. For the next three to five days avoid retinol, AHAs and vitamin C, use only gentle, hydrating products and wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. Redness and a sunburn-like feeling for 24 to 48 hours are normal, and most people return to normal activities the next day.

Key points

  • No makeup, heat or strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Pause retinol, AHAs and vitamin C for three to five days.
  • Keep skin clean, hydrated and protected with daily sunscreen.
  • Early changes show within a couple of weeks, and fuller results build over six to twelve weeks.

Microneedling works by triggering your skin's own repair process. Good aftercare supports that healing, keeps your skin comfortable and protects your results.

What is normal after microneedling?

Your skin has been through a controlled workout, so some reaction is expected:

  • Redness and mild swelling for the first 24 to 48 hours, often with a warm, sunburn-like feeling.
  • Tightness and dryness as the skin starts to renew.
  • Light flaking for a few days afterwards.

Most people go back to their normal routine the next day. Contact us if you notice increasing pain, heat, swelling or pus, any blistering, or redness that is getting worse rather than better after two days.

The first 24 hours

This is the most important window, because your skin is at its most sensitive while the healing process gets going.

  • No makeup for at least 24 hours. Makeup on freshly treated skin can irritate it and increase the risk of infection.
  • No heat. Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and very hot showers.
  • No strenuous exercise. Sweat and heat can irritate treated skin.
  • Keep it clean. Use a fresh pillowcase that night and try not to touch your face.
  • Stay out of the sun, and wear sunscreen if you have to go outside.

Days two to five

Keep your routine very simple:

  1. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser.
  2. Apply a hydrating serum and a soothing, barrier-supporting moisturiser.
  3. Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, and reapply when outdoors.

Pause these for three to five days after treatment:

  • Retinol and other vitamin A products
  • AHAs and other exfoliating acids
  • Vitamin C serums
  • Scrubs and exfoliating tools

When your skin feels completely comfortable again, reintroduce your usual products one at a time.

Why is sun protection so important after microneedling?

Newly treated skin is more sensitive to UV, and sun exposure while it is healing can lead to irritation or uneven pigmentation. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen protects both your skin and the new collagen you are building. For more on choosing one, read our sunscreen guide.

When will you see results?

  • About 10 to 14 days: many people notice smoother, fresher-looking skin.
  • Six to twelve weeks: the bigger improvements in texture, fine lines and scarring appear as new collagen and elastin form.

Because collagen builds gradually, results improve over a course. A common plan is four to six sessions spaced three to four weeks apart. Learn more in microneedling explained.

Questions we’re often asked

When can I wear makeup after microneedling?

Wait at least 24 hours. After that, use clean brushes and gentle products.

Can I wash my face after microneedling?

Yes. From the evening of your treatment, cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, and pat your skin dry.

When can I exercise again?

After 24 hours, as long as your skin feels calm. Choose a cooler environment for your first workout if you can.

Why can't I use vitamin C straight after?

Strong actives such as vitamin C, retinol and AHAs can sting and irritate skin while it heals. Wait three to five days, then reintroduce them gradually.

Is flaking normal after microneedling?

Yes. Light flaking or dryness for a few days is part of the skin renewing. Keep it moisturised and let it shed on its own.
